“Leaving a Permanent Mark” – AWAD Member Kristen Knupp Interviewed Michal Rovner at Pace Gallery in Geneva

Thursday, April 4th, 2019

Kristen Knupp met with Michal Rovner at Pace Gallery to see the opening of “Evolution” in Geneva.  Rovner was born in 1957 in Israel, and had a solo show of her video work at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 2002. She then represented Israel at the Venice Biennale in 2003. Rovner is currently working on installations for the public realm at the new Canary Wharf Crossrail station in London.  Rovner’s work is known for her non-narrative and timeless video installations, focusing on the movement of people, alongside addressing issues of identity, and what it means to be human.

Animals are Good to Think With at Guns & Rain Gallery

Monday, April 1st, 2019

It’s hard to believe that almost exactly a year ago, Guns & Rain opened their new space in Parkhurst, Johannesburg. They are please to present their quirky and provocative new group show, “Animals are Good to Think With”,  featuring Ann Gollifer (Botswana), Vernon Reed (South Africa), Tawanda Takura (Zimbabwe) and Rosemarie Marriott (South Africa).

In 1962, French structural anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss, in his work on totemism, coined the famous – now even clichéd – phrase that “animals are good to think with”. He argued that animals were not simply good to eat; nor were they simply objects of identification or symbolism, but rather part of a structure of human thinking that was common across all societies.

The exhibition is ongoing through April 12th.

Truth and Beauty present Spellbound by photographer Ken Lorenz

Tuesday, February 19th, 2019

Truth and Beauty Gallery is pleased to present Spellbound. The show opens on February 23rd and runs to March 9th. The artist Ken Lorenz will be in attendance for the opening from 1 – 4pm.

EXHIBITION STATEMENT
“Inspiration for my image-making comes primarily from Colombian writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez,
a Latin American author who developed the novel literary genre, Magic Realism, as a basis for storytelling.
‘Magic Realism’ is defined as “making use of magic elements in order to create an alternative  to accepted reality.
Time exists in a kind of timeless fluidity.”
While each series is different, this is the overarching concept weaving them together.
The images in this exhibition have no distinct psychological relationship;  yet the distortion –
obscurity and ambiguity evident in each photograph —  establishes the artistic intention. ”

Images from three portfolios are featured in this exhibition:
In The Shadow of Puppets
Words in Search of a Photograph
