Visit to Terrains of the Body at the Whitechapel with curator Emily Butler

AWAD presents – Visit to ‘Terrains of the Body – Photography from the National Museum of Women in the Arts’ with curator Emily Butler, Whitechapel’s Mahera and Mohammad Abu Ghazaleh Curator, a curator, writer and translator who has been with Whitechapel Gallery since 2010.

This event has been made possible by Beth Colocci, who will also attending the visit. Beth is Chairman of Trustees of UK Friends of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, an independent curator, arts patron and photographer.

The visit takes place during Late Night Thursday and will start promptly at 6.30pm so we recommend arriving at the general reception for 6.15pm. The visit will be followed by drinks at The Refectory at the Whitechapel  – The ticket price includes a drink and nibbles.

About Terrains of the Body

Drawn from the National Museum of Women in the Arts (Washington, U.S.), this collection display showcases photography and video work by seventeen contemporary artists from around the world.

By turning their camera to women, including themselves, these artists embrace the female body as a vital medium for storytelling, expressing identity and reflecting individual and collective experience.

Featuring work by: Marina Abramović, Rineke Dijkstra, Anna Gaskell, Nan Goldin, Charlotte Gyllenhammar, Candida Höfer, Icelandic Love Corporation, Mwangi Hutter, Kirsten Justesen, Justine Kurland, Nikki S. Lee, Hellen van Meene, Shirin Neshat, Daniela Rossell, Eve Sussman and the Rufus Corporation, Janaina Tschäpe and Adriana Varejão. For more information click here.

A small number of tickets will be available, subject to availability for non-Members from 13th February.

Public transport

  • The Whitechapel Gallery is less than 1 minute walk from Aldgate East underground station.
  • Alternatively, Liverpool Street and Tower Gateway stations and Shoreditch High Street overground station are approximately 15 minutes walks from the Gallery.
  • Buses: The 25, 205 and 254 stop outside the gallery. The 15, 115, 40, 42,45 and 67 buses stop outside Aldgate Station. The 35, 43,78,149, 242, 344 and 388 stop on Commercial Road. The 242 and 253 stop outside Liverpool
Street Station.
