ODETTA is pleased to present Bluebird of Happiness

Thursday, July 25th, 2019

ODETTA happily announces their first Summer Exhibition, Bluebird of Happiness,  in their new space at 1st Dibs Gallery.  The exhibition features artists Daniel Hill, Paula Overbay, and Andra Samelson. The Flat File Feature Artist is Angie Drakopoulos. The exhibition opens on July 30th and closes August 31, 2019. There will be a meet the artists event on August 3rd, 3-5.
A harbinger of good luck, the bluebird signals to the viewer that joy is forthcoming. For the artists of Bluebird of Happiness, each coming to blue in their own way, the audience’s joy is actualized in their paintings through saturated blues, an impossibly light touch, and a flair for the psychedelic. Their meditative fields invite us to move slowly, think less, and let our eyes dance.

Syncopation at ODETTA Gallery

Sunday, April 28th, 2019

ODETTA is pleased to share Syncopation – Emily Berger and Bob Seng. Chance, improvisation within the tight constraints of a limited color palette, and their monastic approach to their chosen materials brings these two artists together in their first two-person exhibition.

Emily Berger’s paintings are based on a structure of repetitive and deliberate gesture that is intuitive but carefully considered. She brushes, wipes, rubs, and scrapes, incorporating the color, texture, and pattern of the wood supports, concealing and revealing underlying layers in various states of transparency and solidity. Working with, and against, whatever happens as she paints, from edge to edge exposes areas of the surface to create shapes. Chance is an essential element of her process; but setting the stage, Berger primes the wood in a clear primer so that even more texture will emerge as the brush stutters across the surface, creating vestigial verticals among the horizontals in unpredictable ways. ODETTA’s FOUND OBJECT

Friday, January 18th, 2019
ODETTA is opening the new year with FOUND OBJECT.
The best found objects hold within them the thrill of discovery and instill wonder at their quirky beauty. Glimmering in a ditch or nearly obliterated on pounded pavement, these artists keep their cast-offs, raise them up and present them, for all to see what they would call beautiful. Through the dynamics of opposites: low, unwanted to exalted, transformed, artists Jo Confino, Diane Englander, Deanna Lee, Jane Sangerman, and Sylvia Schwartz see, a little more carefully, what shimmers and shines in world all around us, freely given.
Found Object is the fourth in a series of color-focused exhibitions held in 2018 – 19. ODETTA invited several artists, who would define themselves as colorists, to submit current portfolios for these shows. The exhibitions created from this call were Hot Stuff, January 2018, Mesmerize, September 2018, Las Gravitas, November/Dec 2018, and now Found Object. While color drives the artists to create, the subjects that emerge as narrative in their abstractions have a breadth that is breathtaking.
The Exhibition closes January 27, 2019.

ODETTA presents KIOSK (13/Nov-3/Jan)

Monday, November 9th, 2015

ODETTA presents KIOSK an exhibition featuring artists Linda Cunningham and Levan Mindiashvili who share a deep admiration for the language of buildings and surfaces in ruins, both ancient and modern. Well traveled, they have spent time touching these walls, and have read from their destination’s kiosks. This tactile knowledge filters back into their work in torn pages, layers, metallic bits, and shards of information, precariously juxtaposing ancient against industry, governments and the onslaught of Nature.

ODETTA is a new gallery exhibiting works by mid-career artists who have honed their craft and their vision. Special interest in contemporary painting, glyphs, music, color field, buddha mind, minimalism, playfulness and encyclopaedic obsessiveness.
