JoAnne Artman Gallery-Laguna Beach presents Fourth Wall – Room Series

Tuesday, October 3rd, 2017

JoAnne Artman Gallery is pleased to present the second installment of Brooke Shaden’s Fourth Wall – Room Series in which the artist continues her exploration of the space between illusion, perception and identity in the photographic medium. The term “fourth wall” is a reference to an exercise in the audience’s suspension of disbelief in the field of theatre and film. This happens when the invisible barrier between the reality of the action on screen and the present moment is broken by one of the characters directly addressing the audience. Shaden plays with this concept through the sense of anonymity when viewing the work, capitalizing on the self-reflective nature of the photographs. We are at once the voyeur as well as a participant in the unfolding action, activating the images through our gaze and giving life to the stories captured inside.  Artist Reception: Thursday, October 5th, 2017 from 6pm-8pm the exhibitions continues through November 15th, 2017.

JoAnne Artman Gallery Laguna Beach presents JAMES VERBICKY | New Works

Wednesday, August 23rd, 2017

JoAnne Artman Gallery in Laguna Beach is pleased to present JAMES VERBICKY | New Works. Working within the collage medium, James Verbicky’s sculptural collages are visually rich in content and meaning. The work can be read as both sculpture as well as painting, an opulent, textural assemblage of paper strips that unfurl and cascade over the surface. Verbicky’s current body of “media paintings” explores the idea of the mental continuum or mind stream through paper collage. The pieces are sculptural collages that play on the on the idea of the found object or assemblage, with Verbicky positioning the strips to create new images that become evident at a distance, the jumble of words and colors taking on new form and shape. Language is an important part of Verbicky’s artistic practice as well, with the positioning of the letters, symbols, and phrases taking on new life as well, transforming the disparate elements into a continuous story. The works carry a spiritual resonance as through Verbicky’s choice in titles, uniting the works in the idea of awareness of both the constant fluctuations of our lives and the universal state of motion.

The exhibition closes September 3

The Boys are Back in Town…no not Thin Lizzy…a song inspired by their working class fans who tended to drink heavily…or so I read. “…Guess who just got back today?  Those wild-eyed boys that have been away… Man, I still think those cats are great…”
