Guns & Rain present Faith: Rituals, Spirit & Sea

Wednesday, May 8th, 2019

Guns & Rain Gallery is pleased to present Faith: Rituals, Spirit & Sea, Mozambican artist Mário Macilau’s first solo show in Johannesburg, in collaboration with Ed Cross Fine Art, London.

Animals are Good to Think With at Guns & Rain Gallery

Monday, April 1st, 2019

It’s hard to believe that almost exactly a year ago, Guns & Rain opened their new space in Parkhurst, Johannesburg. They are please to present their quirky and provocative new group show, “Animals are Good to Think With”,  featuring Ann Gollifer (Botswana), Vernon Reed (South Africa), Tawanda Takura (Zimbabwe) and Rosemarie Marriott (South Africa).

In 1962, French structural anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss, in his work on totemism, coined the famous – now even clichéd – phrase that “animals are good to think with”. He argued that animals were not simply good to eat; nor were they simply objects of identification or symbolism, but rather part of a structure of human thinking that was common across all societies.

The exhibition is ongoing through April 12th.
