Animals are Good to Think With at Guns & Rain Gallery

Monday, April 1st, 2019

It’s hard to believe that almost exactly a year ago, Guns & Rain opened their new space in Parkhurst, Johannesburg. They are please to present their quirky and provocative new group show, “Animals are Good to Think With”,  featuring Ann Gollifer (Botswana), Vernon Reed (South Africa), Tawanda Takura (Zimbabwe) and Rosemarie Marriott (South Africa).

In 1962, French structural anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss, in his work on totemism, coined the famous – now even clichéd – phrase that “animals are good to think with”. He argued that animals were not simply good to eat; nor were they simply objects of identification or symbolism, but rather part of a structure of human thinking that was common across all societies.

The exhibition is ongoing through April 12th.

Guns & Rain at AKAA in Paris this November

Thursday, November 1st, 2018

Guns & Rain is pleased to participate in the AKAA – Also Known As Africa Fair. The third edition of the fair will be held from November 9th to 11th at the Carreau du Temple in Paris. It is the only art fair in France devoted to contemporary art and design centred on Africa. Since its first edition in 2016, AKAA stands for a multi-faceted Africa, which transcends historical boundaries and whose voices resonate in the four corners of the world, carried by the vision of each artist.

This year AKAA returns with the same desire to showcase a vibrant art scene, brought together by all the artists claiming a link to Africa. As in the previous editions, all types of contemporary art expressions will be in the spotlight : sculpture, painting, photography, video installation, performance and design.  Guns & Rain will present – Asanda Kupa, Thina Dube, and Ann Gollifer at AKAA.
