Stephen Maine- Press Play – at ODETTA

ODETTA is pleased to present their second solo exhibition in our new Chelsea location – Stephen Maine- Press Play with supporting artworks by Ryan Sarah Murphy as our Flat File Feature Artist.

Through humble materials, and an exploration into gravity and printmaking, Stephen Maine, in Press Play offers an updated approach to gestural abstraction. On a monumental scale, Maine creates a playful system of applying paint to canvas that is simultaneously performance, Rube Goldbergian engineering, and “blind painting.” Employing traditional printmaking skills, like developing a registration system for applying multiple layers of color, but on a gigantic scale, the plates obscure his view of what is actually happening on the canvas. The resulting color-rich abstractions offer surprising nuances and associations with landscape and science, while toggling between macro and micro perspectives. In contrast, Ryan Sarah Murphy’s abstractions, featured in our Flat Files, decidedly coax the found packaging materials to interact with one another in unexpected, yet lucid ways. The mass produced, tossed out, eye-candy-colored shards and planes move Murphy to develop a grammar that presents bridges, overpasses, subway lines… the urban landscape.
