Guns & Rain present Faith: Rituals, Spirit & Sea

Guns & Rain Gallery is pleased to present Faith: Rituals, Spirit & Sea, Mozambican artist Mário Macilau’s first solo show in Johannesburg, in collaboration with Ed Cross Fine Art, London.

Based in Maputo, Mário Macilau is an award-winning photographer who works with “the ghosts of society” – socially isolated groups and subcultures – activating subjects and their stories through a psychologically sensitive lens. He believes in the people and places that he documents and represents, and views his artistic practice as a tool for social change.

Angolan curator Paula Nascimento has described Macilau’s work as lying “between documentary precision, anthropologic study and poetic interpretation”. His Faith series explores indigenous religious practices in contemporary Mozambique – ranging from teaching to healing to rites of passage – founded on the belief that individual spirits and ancestors inhabit natural objects and phenomena. These practices reflect distinctly local yet diverse conceptions of God, the cosmos, and the supernatural – all ultimately seeking coherence, meaning, and connection. Faith is a salute to the power of traditions yet also an oblique condemnation of governments failing their people.

The Exhibition runs from May 16th to June 13th.

For collectors in the US, Australia and New Zealand, the gallery is excited to announce our new partnership with Art Money: take your art home today and pay over 10 months. No interest. No fees.
