Susan English Periphery at Kathryn Markel Fine Art

Kathryn Markel Fine Arts is pleased to present its latest solo exhibition of recent paintings by Susan English. At the core of this new body of work are the ideas of space, boundaries, and perception. The periphery is defined as the outer limit or the edge of a place or an object – a dropping off point. English is drawn to the expansive spaces where the horizon is seen as an edge, one that might be perceived only indirectly or unconsciously. The works range of color represents an intersection of the inside and the outside, as well as the limits of color. How far can green be pushed before it becomes blue? How many infinite directions can you push a brown or a gray or a white? A vibrancy and subtle hum of energy is created in the peripheral area between hues, and in the moments where the color is it’s most concentrated. The exploration of space both conscious and subconscious, where the known meets the unknown is a driving force behind the work in Periphery.

Exhibition ongoing through May 4th, 2019
