ARTful | Exhibition of David N Hicks & Philip Maltman Artwork – Artist Talk

ARTful is delighted to be exhibiting artowrk by artist David N Hicks and Philip Maltman in the main reception lobby area at Vintners Place, 68 Upper Thames Street, London, EC4V 2AF. Come along where both artists will be in attendance to talk about their work.

David Hicks is an artist who uses abstraction to explore a language of line, form and emotive image. Mostly working in oils and collage David uses methods of layering and of contemplative responses to the inner workings of the painting as it builds.

He works either on one painting at a time or in in a series with a similar medium and this exploration allows an internal dialogue to emerge. Often listening to music or with a story or personal image in mind his response is a natural instinctive way of painting.

He will allow some paintings to rest for months before painting over them creating layers and depth. Fine Papers are used in his work as well as bold brush strokes and lines. In some painting’s landscapes may appear as recognisable subjects illuminated by the personal response within the viewer.

Philip Maltman is a Scottish born painter whose work among other things, explores the ‘littoral zone’ i.e. the shoreline or the area where the land meets a body of water. Philip uses mark making to create a kind of order out of the chaos that characterises this zone. Further, in other zones, Philip attempts to address the constant flux of everyday life in which multiple layers of light, colour, air, moisture, unseen rays, dust, sound, art, music, literature, flora, fauna, space and silence mix to create the environment which we all strive to decode. In a painting he is trying to fix aspects of this flux.

The artist trained at Hornsey College of Art and Ravensbourne College of Art & Design. He has since exhibited at galleries throughout the UK, including the Royal Academy in London.
